What 弭 means
The “stop” sense grew from a bow end. Its older concrete sense is a bow end reinforced with bone or horn; bronze inscriptions include 象弭, an ivory bow end. A traditional account says that end helped loosen tangled reins, extending the sense to settling or stopping. Classical texts also use 弭 for soothing, appeasing, or forgetting.
