What 弮 means
弮 names a crossbow’s bow or bowstring in classical Chinese. In the Western Han letter 《报任安书》 (“Letter to Ren An”), soldiers raise an empty crossbow after their arrows run out.
Mandarin dictionaries give two readings: quān for the weapon and an old county name; the juàn reading of 弮 covers curled or scroll-related senses. The sentence or dictionary entry tells you which meaning is intended.
Classical, specialized vocabulary: use the surrounding sentence to distinguish the weapon sense from the curled or scroll-related sense.
In the classical passage about an empty crossbow, 弮 means the weapon; 拳 means “fist.”

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
