What 御 means
Its meaning changes with the language and word.
The early Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi explains 御 through directing horses and records 馭 as an older form. That is a historical written link, not just a visual resemblance.
Writing the Japanese honorific prefix as 御 feels more formal than the usual kana spelling.
The prefix is usually read お (o) or ご (go); おん, み, and ぎょ occur in more formal, sacred, or imperial words.

1Why does 御 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
