What 德 means
Virtue or moral character, sometimes a thing’s natural power.
Pre-Analects texts, written before the collection of sayings linked to Confucius, use 德 for qualities that are not always judged as good or bad. Confucian writing later emphasizes cultivated moral character and its influence on others. Daoist writing also uses it for the power or quality expressed through the Dao, or Way. “Virtue” is a useful gloss, but it does not fit every passage.
Where did 德 come from?
Its written form developed through early Chinese writing traditions.
The earliest clear surviving examples date to the early Western Zhou, an ancient Chinese dynasty. 德 appears on ceremonial bronze vessels and bells, in names and as a personal quality such as character or beneficence. The spoken word predates these surviving written examples.
The graph changed as Chinese writing changed. An “upright heart” reading makes a moral story from its visible parts, but it is an interpretation, not a settled account of the character’s origin.
What does 德 mean in a message?
By itself, 德 does not tell you what the sender intends.
It may be a word, part of a name, or a quotation fragment. Ask for the full phrase or reference before treating it as a compliment or a judgment about you. When 德 appears in a compound, the surrounding characters narrow its meaning.
In ethical or philosophical writing, 德 carries moral weight; a name containing it is not automatically a judgment.
A lone 德 is not enough to infer praise or insult. Ask for the phrase.

1Why does 德 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
