Forget

4569/20992

忘 means “forget” or “fail to remember.” Mandarin reads it wàng, written in pinyin (Mandarin’s Latin-letter spelling). A bare 忘 is not a full message: it does not say “I forgot” or “forget it” without surrounding words.

What 忘 means

忘 names forgetting or failure to remember. 心 is the heart/mind component; 亡 gives the sound and reinforces loss.

Bronze inscriptions from the late Spring and Autumn period show 忘; later handwritten and seal-script forms, an older formal style, keep its basic structure.

Chinese 忘记 means “forget.” Japanese 忘れる (wasureru) can also mean overlook or leave something behind. Korean 망각 means “forgetting” or “oblivion”; it is a Korean word of Chinese-character origin that includes 忘, not a reading of 忘 alone.
