What 记 means

In Mandarin, 记住 means “remember,” while 记录 means “record.” The Chinese character 记 can also name a written account or marker in compounds.
Shuowen, an early Chinese character dictionary, glosses 記 as setting information out; it analyzes 言 as the meaning element and 己 as the sound element.
Why do I see 記 instead?
記 is the traditional Chinese form corresponding to 记.
Japanese also uses 記. Regional fonts can vary the strokes of a Han character; 记 and 記 are separate encoded characters.
