What 愿 means
It marks a wish, hope, or willingness. Read the whole word: 愿意 describes readiness to act; 许愿 means making a wish. Neither says that a hoped-for event came true.
Older Chinese also used 愿 independently for “cautious” or “sincere.” The People's Republic of China's 1956 simplification scheme listed 愿(願)as a simplified form of 願; it formalized this written relationship rather than inventing 愿.
Everyday vocabulary in Simplified Chinese.
Bare 愿 in a classical passage can mean “cautious” or “sincere,” not a wish.

1Why does 愿 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
