Han character 抎

5263/20992

抎 is an old verb for losing something, with a second classical sense of falling. Its Mandarin reading is yǔn. Outside a quotation, it reads as literary or obscure, so a lone message needs its source or context.

What 抎 means

Its basic sense is “lose”; classical passages also use it for “fall.” Dictionaries gloss it with 失 (“lose”). The Shuowen Jiezi, a classical Chinese character dictionary, identifies 手 (“hand”) as the action component and 云 as the sound component.

A passage titled “Yinchu” in the Lüshi Chunqiu, a Chinese work compiled around 239 BCE, says King Zhao and Cai Gong fell into the Han River; there, 抎 means “fall.” Older Chinese usage also lets 抎 stand for 隕 in a falling sense.

Japanese dictionaries list うん and いん, which follow Chinese-derived sounds, as well as うしなう (“to lose”) and おちる (“to fall”), which use Japanese words for the character’s meanings.

What does 抎 mean when someone sends it?

A lone 抎 does not tell you which sense the sender means. Ask for the surrounding sentence or source; the character alone cannot settle whether it means “lose” or “fall.”

As of 8 September 2026, 抎 has no established chat meaning. In casual writing it reads as literary or deliberately obscure, so the sender needs to share the source or language context.

How do I type 抎?

Enter yun3 in a Mandarin pinyin IME, then select 抎. Some IMEs also accept the tone-marked input yǔn. If it is not offered, enter the Cangjie code QMMI or draw the character with handwriting input.

Classical and dictionary-level; in casual writing, it reads like a quotation or a deliberate archaic choice.

Alone, it is too rare to carry a shared chat meaning.
