What 撰 means
It names the act of composing, compiling, or selecting written work. In Chinese, 撰文 and 撰稿 refer to writing an article or draft; 撰集 and 撰述 refer to assembling or authoring a work. The surrounding word decides which English verb fits.
A 2024 entry in Taiwan's Ministry of Education variant dictionary notes that 撰 is absent from Shuowen, an early Chinese character dictionary, and cites an example in a history of the Later Han dynasty. This is evidence of written use, not a secure account of how the character originated.
Why does 撰 change by language?
The language and the neighboring word determine its reading. Chinese dictionaries center on writing and compilation. Japanese dictionaries also record “select,” with readings せん (sen) and えらぶ (erabu). Japanese compounds such as 撰集 can refer to compiling or selecting a collection, while 勅撰 points to a work selected by imperial order.
A Japanese lexicographic entry's earliest cited example is from 984. The Chinese and Japanese examples show literary use in both traditions by those dates.
Is 撰 the same as 選?
No. They overlap on selection, but their meanings differ. Japanese 選 is the ordinary character for choosing or selecting; 撰 also covers composing and compiling. The whole compound is the safer guide: 撰文 means writing an article, while 選ぶ is the everyday verb “to choose.”
Formal and bookish; it frames writing or compilation as editorial or literary work.
Don't read 撰文 as merely “choose”: it means composing an article.

1Why does 撰 look different in Japanese text?
It can: Japanese fonts may draw Han characters with different stroke forms. That visual difference alone does not change the character or make it 選; consider the surrounding word as well.
