What 纂 means
It means gathering material into a compiled work.
That is why 编纂 means compiling a dictionary, encyclopedia, or other source-heavy book: 纂 adds the idea of collecting and ordering what already exists, not writing from scratch. Beside it sits an older sense, a red silk ribbon used in dress, plus a classical extension to “inherit” or “carry on.” In Mandarin Chinese, its romanized pronunciation for input is zuǎn.
In Japanese the same character lives on in 編纂 for compilation and in the verb 纂める for gathering things together.
Formal and bookish; it sounds at home in reference works, editions, and historical prose.
If you mean “write,” choose 撰; 纂 implies assembling existing material.

1Why does 纂 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
