Chinese character 撾

5823/20992

撾 means “strike” or “grab” in literary Chinese; Mandarin pinyin zhuā sounds roughly like “jwah,” with the tongue curled back for zh. In 撾鼓 it is the drum-beating verb, while 老撾 is the traditional Chinese name for Laos. The action sense and country-name use have different histories.

What 撾 means

It means “strike” or “grab” in action words. In Mandarin, the action reading is zhuā in pinyin, the system for spelling Mandarin sounds with Latin letters; its first sound is roughly the English “j” in “judge,” made with the tongue curled back. In 撾鼓 it means beating a drum; literary examples also use it for striking a gate or seizing someone.

A Later Han account describes the musician Mi Heng performing 參撾, a named drumming technique associated with a performance at Yuyang. The 2024 Taiwan Variant Character Dictionary does not list 撾 under Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, and points instead to later records such as Jiyun. That leaves the character's remote origin uncertain.

Why does 撾 appear in 老撾?

In 老撾, 撾 is part of the Chinese name for Laos. A 2015 study follows Chinese names for Lao peoples and states in records dated 69–1627. Earlier records include Ai Lao and Lao; Yuan- and Ming-era sources also record Lao Ua, Lao Koua, and Lan Jang. These forms place 老撾 in a changing tradition of Chinese names for Lao polities.

A Ming account offers one explanation: it links 撾 to 爪, “claw,” through a story that Lao people wore carved claw ornaments. Another proposal connects the name with Sua, an older name associated with Luang Prabang. These are proposed explanations for 老撾, not the established base meaning of 撾.

How do I type 撾?

Enter zhua in a traditional Chinese input method. Type the Mandarin pinyin without its tone mark, zhua, then select 撾 for the action sense. For the country name, enter the whole word 老撾; a simplified-Chinese input method uses 老挝.

Fonts can draw the strokes differently without changing the character or its reading. Taiwan's CNS 11643 character record showed regular, black, and Song-style specimens in 2024; these are different font designs for the same character.

Alone, 撾 reads as literary or historical; in 老撾 it is part of the traditional-Chinese name for Laos.

Inside 老撾, read the whole name as Laos; 撾 does not mean “grab” there.
