Chinese character 朡

6434/20992

Dictionaries record 朡 for binding someone’s feet and for a violent illness, among other old senses. On its own in a message, it does not show which sense you intend; its history runs through 艐, a form once used for a ship stuck in sand.

What 朡 means

It has several historical dictionary senses, not one settled everyday meaning.

Dictionaries record 朡 for binding someone’s feet with a restraint and for a violent illness. Its other recorded uses sit in separate historical entries, so the character alone does not tell a reader which one is intended.

Why does 朡 have several historical senses?

Its records preserve distinct old entries and spellings.

The Eastern Han Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, records 艐 under 舟, the boat component, for a ship stuck in sand. Its form combines 舟 with 㚇 as a sound component; later dictionaries call 朡 the clerical-script form of 艐, a form associated with an older Chinese writing style.

That nautical entry extends from “ship stuck” to “reach.” 三朡 names an ancient state, and historical sources spell that name with 㚇, 鬷, and 朡-related forms. These records preserve different uses; they do not make 朡 a clear standalone message.

Historical and specialist; ordinary messages give it no dependable shared tone.

Without context, readers cannot tell which historical sense you intend.

Drift: As of 2025, reference sources place 朡 mainly in ancient texts and specialist study of historical words; a message alone leaves its intended sense unclear. (as of as of 2025)
