Pine

By itself, 松 names the pine tree. In Mandarin Chinese it is pronounced sōng; as the Japanese pine kanji, it is read matsu. In Chinese compounds, nearby characters help set the meaning: 松树 means pine tree, while 松开 means loosen or release.

The Chinese character dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, compiled around 100 CE, analyzes 松 as 木 for the tree meaning and 公 for the sound. It also records a variant written with 容. This is an early written record, not a date for when the character was invented.

Why can 松 mean relaxed or loose?

Simplified Chinese writes 鬆’s loose sense with 松. This spelling merger covers words for loosening, releasing, or relaxing; it does not mean the pine’s meaning has changed. Traditional Chinese keeps 鬆 for those senses and 松 for pine.

松弛感 describes relaxed, self-possessed composure. In 2024, Chinese news reported it among that year’s youth buzzwords, describing ease under pressure. The report dates the phrase’s recognition, not its invention.

Why pair pine, bamboo, and plum?

Together, they signal endurance through winter. Chinese literati art and writing pair pine (松), bamboo (竹), and plum (梅) as the Three Friends of Winter: pine and bamboo stay green while plum flowers early. The motif makes the plants images of constancy, integrity, and resilience; their connection is cultural, not a resemblance among their characters.

In Japan, the same trio also appears as a New Year motif. A 1996 Tokushima Prefectural Museum account describes kadomatsu, a New Year pine-and-bamboo display, as a yorishiro—a place for the New Year deity to arrive—and links pine with longevity. That ritual setting does not make every 松 a greeting.
