What 椁 means
It is the wooden enclosure around an inner coffin. Built in the burial pit, it could also hold grave goods. Archaeological histories trace it through ancient Chinese tomb traditions: Yangshao single-coffin graves, Dawenkou and Liangzhu timber frames, and developed Longshan tombs across the fifth to third millennia BCE.
Later, coffin counts and compartments could signal rank. Eastern Zhou tombs show regional and period variation, not one fixed rule.
椁 or 槨?
They are alternate written forms of the same term. 槨 is the traditional form; 椁 is its simplified form in modern Chinese.
