What 槨 means
It is the casing around an inner coffin. 棺 is the inner coffin; 槨 is the outer one. Early dictionary graphs already record this funerary sense.
Wooden outer-coffin burials appear in late Neolithic Dawenkou culture. In Shang and Zhou burials, its size followed rank and its surrounding space held grave goods.
Why did anyone build a 槨?
It enclosed the coffin and organized burial space. Elite examples could be decorated and built as part of a furnished tomb, not treated as an ordinary casket.
Japanese archaeology also uses 槨 for stone, clay, or gravel surrounds. 椁 is the simplified/variant form of 槨, while 棺槨 names the inner-and-outer coffin pair.
Funerary, classical, and archaeological; specialized outside those contexts.
Do not read 槨 as the inner coffin itself.

Questions people ask
1Why does 槨 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
