槧

7144/20992

槧 is an old Chinese character for a wooden writing board; it also came to mean a letter and, later, a woodblock-printed edition. If it arrives alone in a message, treat it as a rare historical or bibliographic term and ask for context.

What 槧 means

A writing board, letter, or printed book edition.

The early Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, completed around 100 CE, describes 槧 as a wooden writing tablet: the rough board before it was finished as a 牘, or writing tablet. It explains that timber was split and scraped smooth. An older work, Lunheng, also describes preparing boards for official records.

This places 槧 beside 牘 and 簡, a bamboo or wooden writing slip, in an older writing tradition. These surfaces held official records, accounts, letters, and writing practice. 槧 could also stand for a letter or written message.

How did 槧 come to mean an edition?

Its meaning followed the wooden board into printing.

From the Song period onward, Chinese lexicons and bibliographic records extend 槧 from a writing board to a printing block, then to the book edition printed from it. 槧本 means a woodblock-printed edition; Japanese book catalogs use 宋槧 for a Song-period edition.

Woodblock printing carried religious books, classics, official records, commercial works, and popular prints. In 鉛槧, 鉛 means lead writing material and 槧 the board; together they came to stand for writing or editing work.

Should you send 槧 by itself?

Use it only when the reader knows the historical context.

As of 2026, no fixed chat reaction meaning is established for 槧. Sent alone, it is more likely a rare historical term, title, or quotation than a clear emotional cue; ask what context the sender intends.

Mandarin references give qiàn, with a falling fourth tone. Japanese references list readings zan (ざん), san (さん), and sen (せん); fuda (ふだ) and hangi (はんぎ) are board-related readings.

Archaic, scholarly, and bibliographic; it names a writing material, text, or old edition.

Alone, it can look like a typo or an unfamiliar rare name.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 槧 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
