燙

Chinese Character Tang

9178/20992

燙 means “hot enough to scald”; it can also heat, perm, iron, or blanch. In 燙手山芋, heat becomes a metaphor for a problem nobody wants to handle. Later dictionaries preserve the heat-related character, while an older bronze graph looks identical but wrote another word.

Text symbol

What 燙 means

It marks painful heat or heat used deliberately.

燙傷 is a scald; 燙髮 is a perm. In cooking, 燙 means briefly boiling food.

The 2024 Ministry of Education entry says 燙 is absent from 說文. There was no single inventor: 火 marks heat and 湯 supplies the sound. Its source trail includes 龍龕手鑑 (997) and 四聲篇海 (1208); a bronze graph looks identical but wrote another word.

Neutral inside compounds; alarming alone.

Do not translate every 燙 as “burn”.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 燙 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
