What 營 means
A camp, a base, or the work of running something.
The earliest located form comes from a bronze inscription from the mid-Western Zhou period, on the Five Sacrifice Wei ding, in a passage about working two waterways. Later forms pass through small-seal and Qin-slip writing. It grew as a phono-semantic character, with 宮 as the meaning element and a shortened 熒 as the sound element. Later dictionaries gloss it as a bounded settlement, which explains its range: encamping, building, managing, doing business, and seeking profit.
In Japanese, the standard modern form is 営 and the usual compound reading is ei; Korean Hanja reads it as 영. Those are neighboring written traditions and standard-form descendants, not separate reactions. In traditional Chinese writing, 營 itself marks the script choice; the form carries language and orthography information before it carries any tone.
What does 營 mean when someone sends it alone?
By itself, it is a fragment, not a complete reaction.
營 does not tell you “camp” or “business” without the word around it. In a Chinese message, ask for the missing compound or sentence. In a Japanese message, the corresponding modern form is usually 営; in Korean Hanja, the reading is 영. Context matters more than the glyph alone.
In a Chinese message, 營 usually marks traditional-script writing, not a mood.
Do not treat 營 as a mood emoji or silently rewrite it as 营.

1Why does 營 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
