獞 has two attested readings: a dog name and an old label for the Zhuang people. The second is historical outsider terminology, not a neutral modern name; use 壮 for the living community. If someone sends 獞 alone, ask whether they mean the dictionary word or a historical quotation.

What 獞 means

It denotes a dog name or a historical ethnic label.

This was not a one-off invention with a known maker. The earliest evidence I could verify is lexicographic: the character is absent from the Shuowen record, while the later Jiyun entry gives tóng as “dog name.”

Later regional records use zhuàng as an outsider label for the Zhuang people, often beside 瑶 or 猺. Its historical job was to classify a population in writing, but the animal radical placed that label inside a wider derogatory exonym convention.

What does it mean when someone sends 獞?

Treat it as historical language and ask for context.

Alone, it does not settle which reading the sender intends. A dictionary lookup points to the dog-name sense; a quotation about southern history points to the ethnic label.

If the topic is a living Zhuang person or community, treat 獞 as historical wording and use 壮 for the modern name. The safest reply to an unexplained one-character message is: “Do you mean the dictionary word or the historical ethnonym?”

Historical and lexicographic, but derogatory when used as a modern ethnic label.

Do not address a living Zhuang person or community with 獞; use 壮 instead.

Drift: After the 1965 change to 壮, 獞 is a historical or lexicographic form.
