What 皖 means
It preserves an older regional name. That Qianshan-area name survived through 皖山, 皖水, and the Han-era 皖 county, with 睆 and 晥 as early variant forms.
Anhui became a province in 1667, and 皖 became its shorthand. 皖 means Anhui as a whole; 徽 points only to Huizhou, the source of the province's second syllable.
