Chinese character 盟

盟 links a binding oath to the pact or alliance it creates. Read the whole Chinese word: 同盟 and 联盟 name alliances or leagues; 盟友 names an ally; 盟约 and 盟誓 refer to the oath or covenant itself.

Japanese also uses 盟 in formal compounds: 同盟 means an alliance, 連盟 a federation or league, and 盟約 a pact or covenant. These compounds use the Japanese reading メイ; the verb reading ちかう means to swear or pledge.

Where did 盟 come from?

Its earliest written forms appear in oracle-bone inscriptions. In the ancient oath rite, people sacrificed an animal, held its blood in a ritual vessel, stated the pact, and called on divine powers to punish anyone who broke it.

During the Spring and Autumn period, oaths helped regulate relations between states. The meanings expanded from swearing an oath to the covenant and the alliance formed through it.

The written form evolved through successive traditions rather than being designed as a new emblem. Older components and variants document that history; resemblance by itself does not prove a relationship.

What does 盟 mean in a message?

A lone 盟 does not prove someone is promising you something. By itself, it leaves open whether the subject is an oath, a political alliance, or a personal vow. Ask for the full phrase; 盟友, for example, directly calls someone an ally.
