Chinese character 矤

10725/20992

矤 is an old Chinese character used in classical writing to add force, roughly “how much more” or “not to mention.” It is an older form of 矧; if it turns up alone in a modern message, read it as text and use the surrounding words before guessing at tone.

What 矤 means

It adds force: “how much more” or “not to mention.”

The classical Chinese connector 況且 means roughly “what’s more”; 矤 can do a similar job, carrying the previous point forward. Dictionaries also record an additive “also” sense and “tooth root” in a traditional etiquette phrase about smiling. The surrounding words decide which meaning fits.

What does 矤 mean when someone sends it?

Treat it as text; the sentence supplies its tone.

The glyph alone gives no reliable social cue. Read the surrounding Chinese; a quotation may preserve one of its other dictionary senses.

Where did 矤 come from?

An early record appears in a Han dynasty dictionary.

Yang Xiong’s Western Han regional-word book Fangyan records the word for “long” as 矧 in Eastern Qi and 呂 in Song and Lu. This documents regional variation in the wider lexical family, not that 矤 itself always meant “long.”

One early record of the exact written form appears in Xu Shen’s Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese character dictionary compiled in the Eastern Han and completed around 100 CE. Its entry describes the character as marking an extending word and links 矢 to speech moving forward like an arrow: a grammatical job, not a picture.

Archaic and philological; a modern message may preserve a quotation or deliberately use an older written form.

The glyph alone gives no reliable cue to the sender’s tone.

Why does 矤 appear as a box?

A font may not include this uncommon Chinese character; the app can show a missing-glyph box or use another font. The box is a display fallback, not a different character.
