矧 (shěn) means “moreover” or “how much more” in classical written Chinese. It works as an intensifier: what follows it is the stronger case, and Japanese keeps it alive as いわんや (iwan'ya). Alone in a message, treat it as a quotation or language question, not an emoji-style reaction.

What 矧 means

It means “moreover,” “besides,” or “how much more.”

You meet it in the 康誥 chapter of the Book of Documents, where “元惡大憝,矧惟不孝不友” piles a graver charge onto an official warning: the worst criminals — and still worse, the unfilial and unfriendly. That is 矧 doing argumentative work, turning up the volume on the next clause.

Dictionaries preserve older layers too: drawing a bow, “long,” tooth root, and fletching an arrow. The “moreover” job is a borrowed function-word use. Japanese keeps both tracks: いわんや (iwan'ya) for “how much more” and はぐ (hagu) for fletching.

Why is 矧 read differently in Chinese and Japanese?

Chinese uses shěn; Japanese uses しん, いわんや, or はぐ.

Chinese dictionaries list the conjunction and adverb senses “moreover,” “besides,” and “also” under shěn. Japanese kanji references list しん as the sound reading, いわんや for the classical “how much more” construction, and はぐ for fletching. Same character, different language habits.

Its nearest neighbor is 況, which also carries the いわんや reading. The two overlap in function but are separate glyphs: 矧 is analyzed as 矢 plus 引, while 況 is the ordinary word for “circumstances.” Do not swap them.

What does it mean when someone sends 矧?

Read it as “moreover” in a bookish, deliberately old-fashioned voice.

Alone, it has no clause to intensify, so do not assign it an emotion. Ask whether the sender is quoting Classical Chinese, testing an obscure character, or showing off a classical flourish. That question resolves almost every lone-矧 message.

Save it for quotations, language lessons, and historical references. For everyday “also” or “what’s more,” use ordinary wording instead.

Literary and historical; in ordinary chat it reads as quotation, study, or deliberate archaism.

Do not read a lone 矧 as an emotional reaction.

Can I use 矧 in everyday chat?

Yes, but it sounds bookish or playful-archaising. Use ordinary “also” wording for a neutral message.

Why does 矧 look different in different fonts?

It can. 矧 is a CJK glyph drawn by the active font, so style and proportions shift; a box is a missing font, not a meaning.

Is 矧 the same character as 況?

No. They share the literary いわんや job, but 況 is the everyday “circumstances” character; 矧 is rarer and older.
