What 礼 means
礼 links ritual, proper conduct, and respect.
The Mandarin reading is lǐ, written in the pinyin system. It appears in 礼仪 for etiquette or ceremony, 礼貌 for politeness, 礼让 for yielding or deference, and 礼物 for a gift. In Japanese, rei can mean a bow, thanks, or manners; 礼をする means to bow or show respect physically. The surrounding compound sets the specific sense.
Where does 礼 come from?
It grew from ritual practice into a wider code of conduct.
Older graphs associated with 礼 appear in Shang oracle-bone inscriptions, ancient writing carved on bones and shells, and are linked to a ritual vessel. A scholarly account places the character naming these rites in early Zhou; this marks a stage in its history, not the exact modern form 礼.
Under the Zhou, the concept widened from worship and seeking blessings into rites covering rank, government, marriage, mourning, military affairs, and social encounters. Confucian writers treated it as an ethical and political principle for ordering society, not simply good manners.
Can 礼 say thanks on its own?
Not reliably; use the surrounding phrase. Japanese お礼 makes gratitude explicit, but it names thanks rather than functioning as a complete “thank you.” In Chinese, bare 礼 can still point to rites, manners, respect, or a gift. If your intention matters, use a complete thank-you phrase.
In everyday Chinese compounds, 礼 can be ordinary; as a Confucian principle, it carries formal ethical and political weight.
Bare 礼 is ambiguous; use a full thank-you phrase when gratitude is your point.

1Why does 礼 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
