禮 character

11183/20992

禮 names proper conduct in a social or ritual setting: rites, etiquette, respectful treatment, and sometimes a courtesy gift. Chinese compounds show its range, from 禮儀 (“etiquette”) to 無禮 (“rudeness”) and 禮物 (“gift”). Its history begins with offerings and grows into a broader idea of social order; related forms and fonts vary across East Asian writing systems.

What 禮 means

禮 is proper conduct shaped by respect, ritual, and relationships.

It can mean a rite, a rule of conduct, respectful treatment, or a gift offered as courtesy. “Manners” covers only part of it: in Confucian thought, 禮 also organizes roles and public life.

For Confucian thinkers, ritual belonged to ethics, religion, politics, and aesthetics. The point was conduct with a social or ritual purpose, not ceremony for ceremony’s sake.

Where did 禮 come from?

禮 grew from ritual offerings into a wider social code.

Its recognizable ancestry reaches the Shang oracle-bone period, when writing was carved on animal bones and turtle shells. An early graph, 豊, depicts a ritual vessel bearing jade offerings; the later form 禮 adds 示, an altar-related component.

The early practice involved offerings to deities and seeking blessing. Confucian thinkers later broadened 禮 into ceremonies, rank, conduct, and institutions that shaped social order.

What does 禮 mean in a message?

The word around it decides which sense fits.

禮儀 means etiquette or ceremonial conduct; 無禮 describes rudeness or disrespect; 禮物 is a gift offered as courtesy. Alone, 禮 does not specify which sense is meant, so ask for context before treating it as a casual “thanks.”

The same encoded Han character can have regional font shapes; Unicode does not require one outline in every CJK font. 礼 is a separate, related form used in simplified Chinese and Japanese shinjitai, not just another font drawing.

In Chinese compounds, 禮 ranges from formal ritual and courtesy to rudeness and courtesy gifts.

Alone, 禮 leaves the intended sense unclear; don’t read it as an automatic “thanks.”

Drift: As of 2026, traditional Chinese retains 禮, while simplified Chinese and standard Japanese commonly use 礼. Korean compounds preserve the Hanja, with readings 례 or 예, pronounced roughly like “ye” or “rye” with a brief tapped r. (as of as of 2026)

Why does 禮 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
