11102/20992

祝 means “to wish” or “to bless,” and phrases with it can also express congratulations. In Mandarin, it usually begins a wish aimed at someone and a hoped-for outcome; Japanese also uses the character in celebration vocabulary. Historically, 祝 named a ritual official who spoke invocations during sacrifices.

What 祝 means

It means “to wish,” “to bless,” or “to congratulate,” depending on the phrase.

In Mandarin, 祝 usually starts a wish: name the recipient, then the good outcome you hope for. 祝福 offers blessings or good wishes; 祝贺 congratulates someone, especially on an achievement. A wish for success comes before the result; congratulations respond to it.

In Japanese, the verb 祝う (iwau, roughly “ee-wah-oo”) means “to celebrate” or “to wish good fortune.” 祝 also has the reading シュク (shuku, roughly “shoo-koo”) in celebration and congratulation compounds. As a Japanese event heading, it can label the occasion instead of forming a complete Mandarin-style sentence.

祝 grew from ritual invocations into everyday wishes

祝 appears in oracle-bone inscriptions—marks carved on animal bones and turtle shells used for divination—and later in bronze inscriptions and Chu bamboo slips. Later forms include small-seal script, an early standardized writing style, and the Shuowen, an early Chinese character dictionary.

In the Zhouli, a classical account of ritual offices, the 大祝 (chief invoker) spoke set prayers during sacrifices. The Shuowen explains 祝 as the person who leads the words spoken at a sacrifice. This institutional role connects the older ritual speech with the character’s later use in wishes.

A related character, 咒, split from 祝 and was used for prayers as well as spells or curses; 呪 is a variant form of 咒. Older Japanese dictionaries also record はふり as a term for a shrine official, another trace of 祝 in ritual vocabulary.

Warm in personal wishes; formal in congratulations and Japanese event headings. Its ritual history does not make everyday use solemn.

In a Mandarin wish, 祝 needs a recipient and the good outcome that follows.

Why does 祝 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
