What 神 means
神 means a deity, spirit, or supernatural power.
In Mandarin, it is read shén, with a rising tone. In Japanese, it is a kanji (a Chinese-derived character used in Japanese) read kami, shin, or jin. In Korean, it is hanja (a Chinese character used in Korean), read sin (신).
Japanese kami is not a direct substitute for the Christian God. 神 can name a deity or sacred being, but it also appears in words about the mind, spirit, or power beyond ordinary human ability. Translate the whole word containing it rather than the character alone.
What does 神 mean in a message?
A bare 神 may be religious or praise; context decides.
In Japanese messages, 神 can praise an exceptional performance or work—roughly “god-tier.” In worship or religious discussion, it points to a sacred being.
Read the whole word before replying. 神社 names a Shinto shrine, 精神 means mind or spirit, and 神回 is Japanese slang for an exceptionally good episode. If someone sends only 神, the surrounding conversation helps distinguish applause from a religious reference.
Where did 神 come from?
Its recognizable form developed in ancient Chinese writing.
A 2020 study of ancient writing found no separate 神 graph in the late-Shang oracle-bone material it examined: bones and shells inscribed for divination. It places the earliest combined 示–申 form in Western Zhou bronze inscriptions, writing cast or engraved on vessels from that early Chinese dynasty. The study connects this structure with sacred signs and power; it is a historical account, not a guess from similar-looking strokes.
The same 2020 study traces its meaning through China's Warring States period: from a deity's signs or messages and agents such as ancestors toward a broader supernatural concept. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean traditions use the character within their own readings and religious frames.
神 can be solemn in worship and exuberant in praise; the surrounding words set the tone.
Do not automatically translate a bare 神 as the Christian God; check the language and surrounding words.
Drift: In 2016, Japanese 神ってる gained word-of-the-year recognition after baseball use, extending sacred language into emphatic praise for extraordinary performance.

1Why does 神 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
