What 稿 means
In Chinese, 稿 means a draft or manuscript. Mandarin reads it gǎo; Japanese, kō. Korean uses it in 원고 (“manuscript”) and 기고 (“written contribution”), where 稿 is pronounced go.
Chinese compounds show the stage: 草稿 is a rough draft, 投稿 a written submission, and 定稿 a final text.
An older form meant “stalk”
The Eastern Han dictionary Shuowen Jiezi records the older form 槀 with the meaning “stalk.” In 稿, 禾 is the grain component and 高 supplies the sound; 稾 and 藁 are documented written variants.
Compound partners show whether the writing is rough, submitted, or final.
定稿 is final, so 稿 does not always mean unfinished.

1Why does 稿 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
