Traditional Grain Character

穀 means grain or cereals — the broad crop category, not one specific seed. In real writing it appears inside terms for grain, the Five Grains, granaries, and seasonal agriculture. Older classical passages can also use it for “good,” “salary,” or “nourish,” so a historical quotation needs context.

What 穀 means

穀 means grain, cereals, or the wider harvest category.

You usually meet it inside a larger word: 穀物 is grain or cereal, 五穀 names the Five Grains or major grains, and 穀倉 is a granary. Japanese reference material also lists 穀雨, a solar term for rain that nourishes grain.

It was made to label the broad cereal category in writing, not one named crop. The sources consulted for this draft show no one-off inventor. The earliest forms I found are bronze inscriptions labeled Early Western Zhou; later forms run through Chu manuscripts, seal script, Qin slips, clerical script, and regular script. It is phono-semantic: the 禾 part on the left means grain, while the other part gives the sound and a husk association.

What can 穀 mean in classical Chinese?

Classical context can change the reading.

Classical dictionaries record 穀 as “good,” “to live,” an official’s salary, and “to rear” or nourish. Those readings belong to older passages; do not force the modern grain gloss into every quotation.

Is 穀 the same as 谷?

Only for the grain reading; 谷 also means a valley.

Simplified Chinese writes the grain sense as 谷, while traditional Chinese keeps 穀. That shortcut is a trap: 谷 is also the independent character for a valley, so the surrounding sentence decides whether it means grain or landscape.

Japanese standard writing uses 穀 as the simplified modern form and 穀 as the older form; traditional Chinese references preserve the fuller form. A font can therefore make regional forms look different without changing the intended grain word.

A lone 穀 reads as written Han-language text, not a universal pictogram; use it when the recipient shares the language context.

Do not swap 穀 and 谷 casually: 谷 can mean “valley” outside the grain sense.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
