Character 筹

11642/20992

筹 (chóu) means “plan or prepare,” growing out of “count and calculate.” You almost always meet it in compounds like 筹款 (raise money) and 筹备 (get ready). 籌 is the traditional form.

Text symbol

What 筹 means

It started as a counting stick. Early senses cover the tally arrows used in pitch-pot, an old game of tossing arrows into a pot, and 算筹, the small rods used to calculate. The oldest surviving rods discussed here are Warring States pieces excavated in 1954.

Counting became planning: 筹策 is a set of tallies or a strategy, 筹款 raises funds and 筹备 prepares a project. Write the whole two-character compound; 筹 alone looks unfinished.

Written and practical; compounds sound administrative or strategic.

Don't send 筹 alone — write the full compound.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 筹 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
