What 篝 means
篝 means a fire basket or its fire. Japanese reads it かがり (kagari) for the flame and ふせご (fusego) for a basket cover. The Man’yōshū, a Japanese poetry collection, writes kagari as 可我理 in the late 8th century; 新撰字鏡 records the basket sense around 898–901. 篝屋 was a watchfire guardhouse.
In Chinese, 篝火 means a fire covered by a bamboo basket or an outdoor bonfire. The Shiji, an early Chinese history, tells how rebels used a night fire and staged fox call to tell Qin soldiers Chen Sheng would rule.
In Japanese cormorant fishing, handlers use trained diving birds to catch ayu, a river fish; 篝火 lights the boat and draws fish to the surface. Much of the method follows Edo-period practice (1603–1867).
In Japanese, 篝 is literary or technical; hiragana かがり is plainer.

1Why does 篝 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
