Japanese kanji 粋

11916/20992

粋 praises polished tact: stylish without showing off, and alert to other people. In a compound it can mean a field’s finest essence; 粋な計らい calls a considerate gesture especially deft. Japanese reads it いき (roughly “ee-kee”) or すい (“soo-ee”), and the surrounding word sets the nuance.

Text symbol

What 粋 means

It praises tactful style, social fluency, or a thing’s finest essence. In Japanese, いき (iki, roughly “ee-kee”) describes someone or a gesture as stylish, self-possessed, and alert to human nuance. In compounds, すい (sui, roughly “soo-ee”) can stress refined knowledge or the best part of something.

In early Edo merchant culture, including licensed pleasure districts, すい became a social ideal: know the floating world—the theater and pleasure-quarter scene—and move through its codes without clumsy display. A 1656 reputation book already uses the word this way.

Is 粋 a compliment?

Usually: it praises taste, tact, and social awareness. 粋な計らい praises a considerate gesture that lands with flair but no showiness; 粋な人 describes someone with understated style and good social sense.

If someone sends 粋 after a favor or a well-judged reply, take it as approval. In 技術の粋, however, it means a field’s finest achievement, not praise of a person.

Why do いき and すい feel different?

They grew from distinct regional traditions, and are not interchangeable. Kamigata—the Kyoto–Osaka area—associated すい with fluency in its urban entertainment world. Edo (now Tokyo) recast the ideal as いき: restrained urban style with nerve and sensual suggestion.

By late Edo, vocabulary shifted from Kamigata すい toward Edo 通, a term for worldly connoisseurship, and later いき, though usage overlapped. The early-and-mid Edo merchant ideal 伊達 favored bold style and sensual flair. Edo fashion made the idea visible: subdued outer cloth, stripes, and costly hidden linings signaled taste under rules limiting luxury clothing. Philosopher Kuki Shūzō’s 1929 study treated iki as an aesthetic idea.

A warm, slightly literary compliment: it praises taste, restraint, and knowing how to handle people.

For plain kindness, name the act: 粋な計らい makes the praise clearer than bare 粋.

Why does 粋 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
