What 粊 means
粊 means “bad rice” and also names a place in Lu.
An old Chinese character dictionary, 說文解字, links 䉾 (“bad rice”) to 粊誓, a Zhou Book chapter. 米 points to grain; 比 in 粊 and 北 in 䉾 mark sound.
Later records also use 粊 as a place name in Lu, an ancient Chinese state. The Japanese character dictionary 倭玉篇 preserves both senses.

1Why does 粊 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
