Yue Character

粤 means Guangdong or the wider Yue/Cantonese region.

Before it became regional shorthand, 粤 also served in classical Chinese as a sentence-opening particle or pause marker. The Book of Documents, a Chinese classic, preserves the formula “粤三日丁亥.” The same written tradition used Yue labels for southern peoples and states, covering a Lingnan world wider than one modern province.

Qin-Han administration and migration helped reshape the regional linguistic setting; in the Tang-Song period, Guangzhou’s port economy helped its speech become the prestige variety of Yue. Today, 粤 usually compresses Guangdong, its Yue-language sphere, or the culture attached to both.

粤语 or 广东话?

粤语 names the Yue language; 广东话 is a common spoken alternative.

The labels differ in scope as well as tone. 粤语 can name the wider Yue branch, while Cantonese proper is the Guangzhou-centered variety. 广东话 is a familiar spoken label in Hong Kong, Macao, and overseas Chinese communities. For one local variety, name the place instead of assuming the labels are interchangeable.

That is why 粤 in 粤港澳 sounds administrative and regional, while 粤菜 and 粤剧 point to cuisine and opera. In a chat, a lone 粤 is a tag or abbreviation, not an emotion; ask what the sender is labeling if the context is unclear.
