Yue Character

Read it as a Guangdong/Cantonese marker unless the text is classical.

Modern compounds make the reading concrete: 粵語 names Cantonese, while 粵菜 and 粵劇 name cuisine and opera associated with it. Alone, the character is commonly a short regional label; surrounding words tell you whether the focus is place, language, or culture.

The earliest documented layer is different: dictionaries quote 粵 as a classical sentence-opening particle, glossed with the sense of as for or so. Historical sources also write the southern collective name as 百越 or 百粵, so the modern Guangdong sense is a narrowing, not the character's whole history.

Use 粵 as a regional tag

At the front of a compound, 粵 tells the reader that the subject belongs to Guangdong or Cantonese culture: 粵語, 粵菜, and 粵劇. The written relationship with 越 is historical, not a license to swap them in a modern message.

粵 and 粤 are form choices, not different meanings: 粵 is the traditional form, while 粤 is the simplified form used in Mainland Chinese. It is a typed character, so a font draws it; there is no emoji artwork to interpret.
