What 細 means
Thin, fine, small, or detailed; the surrounding word decides.
In Chinese, it can also mean tiny, slender, careful, refined, or trivial. Japanese uses it in 細い (“thin”) and 細かい (“fine-grained, detailed”); Korean Hanja, Chinese characters used in Korean, reads it 세.
The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary dated 100–121 CE, glosses 細 as “minute” and analyzes it as 糸 (“thread,” the meaning component) plus 囟 (a sound component). In its later form, 囟 came to resemble 田 (“field”), but that visual likeness does not give 細 a “field” meaning.

1Why does 細 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
