What 綂 means
It shares 統’s word. 統 first meant the main strand of silk thread, then extended to joining, order, and governing.
《宋元以來俗字譜》, a catalogue of variants in older books, lists 綂 for 統 in two Chinese plays, 《嬌紅記》 and 《東牕記》. A study of Chinese-language books printed in the Philippines from 1590–1610 describes it as one character part replacing another, a change that could speed writing or engraving.
Use traditional 統 or simplified 统 in ordinary modern writing; 綂 suits a preserved source spelling.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
