Chinese character 緧

緧 is an old Chinese word for a rear harness strap: it runs around a horse or ox’s hindquarters when pulling a cart. It also meant to fit the strap. Regional notes pair it with 鞧 and 䋺, and place 紂 in western use.

What 緧 means

It names the strap that holds a cart animal’s harness at the rear.

The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, glosses 緧 as “馬紂也” (“a horse’s rear strap”). The Zhouli, a Chinese ritual and government text, discusses rear restraint when a straight-shafted cart descends.
