To wind, coil, or linger.
《說文》, an early Chinese dictionary, glosses it as gathering or rolling thread. Its earliest form appears in Western Zhou bronze inscriptions; Chu manuscripts preserve another stage. The Book of Songs uses it for vines winding around a tree; it also describes curving paths and returning thoughts.
Literary in tone and classical writing; Cantonese also uses 縈住.
萦 is the simplified form of 縈; script settings can change the glyph without changing the meaning.
