What 羅 means
Its meaning depends on the word and language. Its earliest forms are attested in Shang period oracle-bone inscriptions. Traditional analysis reads its parts as a net bound by threads, fitting its bird-catching sense.
By the Han dynasty, 羅 also named fine, open silk gauze. In Japanese 羅漢, a Buddhist term for an enlightened follower, 羅 marks a sound, not a net. Classical dictionaries also record 羅 as a shortened form of 邏 meaning “patrol.”
Alone, 羅 may be a name, fragment, or Japanese term.
Do not choose “net” without its word and language.

Questions people ask
1Why does 羅 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
