Chinese Character 邏

邏, pronounced luó in Mandarin, is a traditional Chinese character for patrolling or inspecting, most naturally seen inside words such as 巡邏. In 邏輯, it belongs to the modern Chinese word for logic, a separate lexical use from the older patrol sense. Sent alone, it reads like a formal dictionary character, not a chat reaction.

What 邏 means

It means patrol, inspect, or keep watch. In its older practical use, 邏 described moving around to inspect a route or post, and it could name the patrol person or unit. That is why it appears in 巡邏, meaning patrol.

As of 2026, no single first written appearance is securely established. A reliable early anchor is the Shuowen Jiezi “new appendix,” an early Chinese character dictionary, which glosses 邏 as “to patrol”; later dictionary evidence also records a patrol unit and, in literary usage, a mountain or stream edge. Japanese references retain the patrol reading in 警邏 and 巡邏. In modern Chinese, 邏輯 is the traditional form of the established word for logic — a later lexical life, not a patrol instruction.

Why does 邏 look different from 逻?

They are traditional and simplified counterparts. 邏 belongs in traditional-character writing, used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and many classical texts; 逻 is the corresponding simplified form used in mainland China. Choosing 邏 instead of 逻 signals the traditional-character side of the text, not a special tone. The words remain connected: 巡邏/巡逻 means patrol, while 邏輯/逻辑 means logic.

On screen, this is a font-drawn Han character, so stroke details can vary without creating a new meaning. For input, type luo in a Traditional Chinese pinyin IME, the keyboard method that converts romanized sound to characters, and choose 邏; if you use Cangjie, the shape-based Hong Kong and Taiwan input method, ywln is a listed code. Do not send 邏 alone when you mean logic or patrol: the full compound supplies the intended reading.

Formal and lexical as a standalone character; compounds carry the everyday reading.

Do not send 邏 alone expecting the reader to infer logic or patrol.
