What 翇 means
A ritual dance performed holding a whole feather.
Its first secure attestation is the Eastern Han Shuowen Jiezi, China's earliest character dictionary: a music-and-dance rite for Sheji, the soil and grain deities, danced while holding an un-split feather. It was never a general word for wings or flight.
The Zhouli, a classic of Zhou-era rites, writes the same ceremony as 帗舞 — silk radical instead of feather — and the Shuowen records that spelling; later lexicons repeat the gloss, and it never grew an everyday sense.
Will people understand 翇 in a message?
Usually not — read it as a classical reference.
A lone 翇 is most likely a request for identification, a quote from an old text, or a typo — ask what passage it came from and whether fú or pèi is meant.
As of 2026 it has no documented chat or emoji-style meaning; in ritual-text discussion, the surrounding passage carries the sense.
Classical and specialist — it signals historical Chinese or ritual-text context, not casual chat.
Sent alone, it reads as a typo or an unexplained quotation.

1Questions people ask
3what does 翇 mean when someone sends it?
A reference, not a reaction — no settled chat meaning exists as of 2026. Most likely a quote or 'what character is this?'; ask for the surrounding text.
why does 翇 show as a box?
It's font-dependent — 翇 is a CJK glyph, not emoji artwork. Taiwan's CNS record (2024) lists Song, Kai, and Hei forms and Windows 10 support in specified fonts; a font without it draws a box.
how is 翇 pronounced?
Two Mandarin readings are listed: fú and pèi — dictionaries lead with fú; Taiwan's CNS record also gives pèi.
