What 苮 means
A grass woven into mats, like 莞.
A 2024 Taiwanese character dictionary notes no Shuowen entry for it; the Yupian trail around 543 glosses it as a grass resembling 莞, another mat-making plant. Ritual writing later uses it in 苮席, including South Suburban seating and a later reclining-mat poem.
A 2017 dialect table records Nantong 苮 in 棵 for a blue reed, a local reuse. Outside 苮席 or that dialect use, treat lone 苮 as a dictionary find, not everyday Chinese.
Rare and archaic in standard Chinese; dialect-specific in Nantong.
Alone, it can look like a typo; add context such as 苮席.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 苮 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
