What 蒽 means
蒽 is the Chinese chemical name for anthracene.
Nineteenth-century translations often spelled foreign chemical names out by sound. In 1931, chemist Tu Xunli proposed shorter characters for aromatic compounds, pairing a sound clue with the grass-shaped top 艹; his anthracene proposal was 荌. The principle was accepted in 1932; 蒽 entered standard lists in 1933. Those dates track its chemical name, not the character’s origin.

1Why does 蒽 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
