What 蒿 means
蒿 is a broad plant name for mugwort-like Artemisia species. Mandarin hāo sounds roughly like “how,” with a breathy h and a high, level tone.
A pre-Qin (before the Qin dynasty) verse in 《诗经》, an early Chinese poetry collection, has deer eating 蒿. The Han-era 《说文解字》, an early dictionary, glosses it as 菣, saying 艸 marks the plant and 高 supplies the sound.
Old glossaries link 蓬 to 蒿; 蓬蒿 evokes overgrowth, while 蒿目 is a classical phrase for worry. CJK fonts may draw 蒿 in different styles.

1Why does 蒿 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
