What 覝 means
覝 means “to inspect closely.” The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, was completed in 100 CE and presented to the court of China’s Han dynasty in 121 CE. Those dates describe the dictionary, not 覝’s first use. Later dictionary notes connect 覝’s inspecting sense to 廉. Fonts may shape 覝 differently without changing the encoded character.
Classical, lexicographic wording; it fits discussion of a historical gloss.
Do not substitute 廉 for 覝.
