What 觎 means
It means desire or hoped-for gain.
In the classical period, the Chinese chronicle Zuo Zhuan uses 覦 in 民无覦心 (“the people have no covetous hopes”). The early Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi glosses 覦 as “to desire.”
Later records use 觊觎 for coveting office, a throne, territory, or property.
Literary alone; 觊觎 makes the coveting explicit.
By itself, 觎 can look unfinished; use 觊觎 for “to covet.”

2Questions people ask
1Why does 觎 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
