Chinese character 訞

15391/20992

訞 is a classical Chinese character for uncanny or ominous things and artful speech. In older phrases such as 訞怪 and 訞言, the words around it point to different senses: a strange person in one, misleading talk in the other. By itself, it needs a source or sentence around it to read confidently.

What 訞 means

It means uncanny or ominous things, or artful speech.

In Mandarin it is read yāo, roughly like “yow” in “yowl,” said with a high, level tone. An older dictionary gloss, 巧言貌, describes artful or slick speech. 訞怪 can describe a strange, sly person; 訞言 means misleading or slanderous speech. A lone 訞 needs its source phrase for a confident reading.

What is 訞's history?

Classical records link 訞 to 妖 and 𧨶.

The Ministry of Education's 2024 character-variant dictionary says 訞 is not recorded in Shuowen Jiezi, an early dictionary of Chinese characters. It cites 訞怪 in the classical text Xunzi and 訞言 in the Han history Han Shu. The same entry lists 𧨶 as a variant form and quotes commentaries equating 訞 with 妖 in the uncanny sense. 妖's Shuowen entry includes the variant 𡝩, glossed as “clever” and “a woman's smiling appearance”; 祅 is another graph used for uncanny or ominous events.

Classical and dictionary-oriented; a standalone 訞 reads like a quotation or a word someone wants identified.

A lone 訞 does not simply mean “weird”; it can point to misleading speech.

Is 訞 the same as 妖?

Sometimes. Classical commentaries equate 訞 with 妖 in the uncanny sense, while 訞 also has a separate gloss for artful speech. Preserve the exact graph when quoting and let the phrase decide.

Why does 訞 show as a box?

A box means your current font or app cannot render 訞. The character is unchanged; a font with suitable CJK coverage may display it.
