What 訟 means
It means arguing a case before an authority.
No single inventor is recorded in the surviving evidence: the form is attested in late Western Zhou bronze inscriptions and later script traditions. It is traditionally explained as 言, speech, plus 公, public — words brought into the open for judgment.
That public hearing is what 訟 was used for: presenting a dispute for decision. Later Chinese legal culture also idealized 無訟, preventing litigation, while classical use extended it to arguing, accusation, self-reproach, and openly. In the Yijing, its hexagram warns against letting contention run to ruin.
How does 訟 change across East Asian writing?
It stays formal when it crosses languages.
In Chinese, 訴訟 / 诉讼 means litigation and lawsuit; Japanese uses 訴訟 and 争訟 for a legal contest; Korean legal language has 訟訴하다, asking a court to settle a legal relationship. The shared core is law, but the sounds differ: Mandarin sòng, Japanese shō, Korean song.
That makes 訟 a poor casual reaction. As of 2026, no standard chat reading is documented for a lone 訟, so read it as a character someone wants identified or explained — not proof you are being sued.
Formal, legal, and classical; in casual chat it reads as deliberate, quoted, or unexplained.
Do not send it as a casual synonym for argument without Chinese or Classical Chinese context.
