What 訷 means
In Chinese dictionaries, 訷 means “to speak” or “explain.”
In Mandarin’s Pinyin system, which writes Mandarin sounds in Latin letters, its reading is written shēn.
A 2024 entry in Taiwan’s Ministry of Education Dictionary of Chinese Character Variants says 訷 is absent from Shuowen, an early Chinese character dictionary, and cites Guangyun and Jiyun, later rhyme dictionaries organized by sound. Jiyun glosses it as “to speak”; another Guangyun entry links 訷說 with trust.
Is 訷 a variant of 伸?
Related, but not interchangeable in ordinary use.
訷 combines 言, the speech component, with 申, its sound component. Chinese references connect it with both 申 and 伸; a Japanese character reference lists 訷 as a variant of 伸, the ordinary character for “stretch” or “extend.” Chinese dictionary entries therefore center on speech, while Japanese lookup material can lead to the 伸 sense.
Specialist and historical: its natural home is dictionary and variant-form material.
Do not read 訷 as “stretch” automatically; that sense comes through its relationship to 伸.
